Raíces Venezolanas Miami confirmed on Tuesday that there was a fire at the National Institute for Migration (INM) center in Ciudad Juarez (Mexico), resulting in 39 deaths and 29 injuries, could have been avoided with a “serious” US immigration policy.

The organization indicated that the current system, based on the CBP One computer application, was not working and that with this system, migrants were stuck in the area “in a state of vulnerability and desperation”.

In a statement, he denounced the app as failing due to high demand, “while more (migrants) continue on their way to the southern border in caravans or small groups.”

Raices Venezolanas Miami noted that for this reason, “immigrants spend months trying to get the CBP One app to accept their entry request.”

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador blamed the fire on the victims themselves, who he said would have burned mattresses to stop the deportation.

According to Mexican prosecutors, among the dead and injured are citizens of Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Venezuela.

The presence of migrants in the area has intensified this year after the United States announced new measures, including the immediate deportation to Mexico of migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba who cross the border illegally.

According to Raices Venesolanas, unofficial sources to which they had access, wishing to remain anonymous, They were told that the events that provoked the tragedy began when the INM carried out a raid due to complaints about the attitudes of some immigrants.

“Immigrants who were detained were deceived and taken to an immigration post under the promise that their situation would be corrected. Once there, the Mexican authorities told the immigrants that they were not going to correct anything for them, but, on the contrary, they would be deported, ”the message says.

The organization demanded that the agreements between Mexico and the United States on the reception of immigrants be implemented, in addition to the question of whether the former of the countries could actually serve the approximately 50,000 immigrants who were already in the border zone.

For its part, the Miami-based organization of Venezuelans politically persecuted in exile (Veppex), through its president, José Antonio Colina, has requested urgent information from the Mexican government on the nationalities and names of the immigrants killed and injured, as the majority are believed to be Venezuelans.

“We call on the Mexican authorities to resolve the migration crisis at their border with the greatest possible professionalism, given the delicate and volatile nature of the situation,” Colina said.

The presence of migrants in the area has intensified this year after the United States announced new measures, including the immediate deportation of migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba who arrive by land under Section 42.
