Microsoft is busy rolling out AI-powered features. Nothing or no one seems to be able to escape it, so cybersecurity professionals are also enlisting the help of generative AI. The Redmond-based software giant announces (in preview) Security Copilot, an AI assistant designed to protect businesses from threats that escape the human eye.
Security Copilot can be useful at different stages of security policy, Microsoft explains. First, the AI co-pilot can perform a pre-emptive analysis of whether your organization is vulnerable to known vulnerabilities. In the event of suspicious activity, you can commission Security Copilot to carry out a comprehensive analysis. When it’s time to intervene, the AI will also give you instructions on how to proceed.
Security Copilot is based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, so the tool works the same as ChatGPT. You’ll be asking the questions in natural language, and Security Copilot should be able to figure out where to find the information you need. The information can come from various Microsoft security services such as Defender, Sentinel, and Intune.
Cybersecurity professionals no longer have to fear for their jobs because Microsoft sees Security Copilot as an extension and not a replacement for human experts. According to Microsoft, the use of AI should help companies to reduce the complexity of cyber security and to intervene more quickly in the event of potential threats. The lack of security skills is an acute problem for many companies.
Still, it’s best not to put all the keys to your business in the hands of generative AI like Security Copilot. Artificial intelligence can also make mistakes, and with cybersecurity you pay for every mistake in cash. Human control of Copilot’s analytics is therefore always recommended. This is also mentioned by Microsoft itself.
Security Copilot is available in limited preview. Microsoft encourages testers to actively provide feedback on the quality of the output. Microsoft has not yet announced when the AI security assistant will be available across the board.
