“Fat priest” – this is how the English-speaking Internet nicknamed this image, which proliferated on social networks at the weekend and on the first days of the week. It turned out so realistic that few people realized it was fake.

The picture was first posted on Saturday by a Twitter user named Leon. Since then, it has become the source of numerous memes and thoughts about Francis’ lifestyle.
The image of the Pope turned out to be one of several other similar fake photos posted on Reddit, and it was actually him. Created by Midjourney v5 neural network. It is an image synthesis model that produces some of the best and most realistic results to date. Like its counterparts DALL-E and Stable Diffusion, it only requires one text request from a person for it to work.
Shortly after the tweet went viral, Twitter added a contextual alert to the post: “This is an AI-generated image of Pope Francis. This is not a real photo”.
By the way, a similar situation occurred a short time ago. With Midjourney’s help, they created multiple “photos” of Donald Trump, who was detained by the police during street protests. In the photos, the former US president is heavily detained by a police team. There were more such pictures soon. Some of them are “cute” and you can easily recognize the work of the AI thanks to the bugs, while others look very realistic. This has led some netizens to believe that Trump was actually detained by the police.
