Windows 12 Rumors: A modern OS with AI, faster updates and better security

Rumors about Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 12 operating system are spreading as sources of system requirements emerge. Just two years after the release of Windows 11, it looks like the company is gearing up for its successor. Windows 12 is expected to bring major platform updates, AI-powered OS modernization, faster updates, and enhanced security. Details are here…

Microsoft has tried to modernize the Windows platform for years. Windows Core OS was an attempt to build a lightweight, secure platform that was quickly updated. However, Microsoft has never launched a release for traditional PC form factors. The last trial, Windows 10X, was canceled in 2021 after extensive testing and development.

Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans indicate that the company is working on a new project called CorePC. This project aims to modernize the Windows platform with similar innovations to Windows Core OS, but with an emphasis on compatibility with legacy Win32 applications. CorePC is designed to be modular and customizable, allowing Microsoft to configure different “versions” of Windows with different levels of feature and application compatibility.

CorePC is said to implement state separation by creating read-only partitions, allowing for faster updates and a more secure platform. Separation of states also provides a faster and more reliable system reset function, which is crucial for Chromebooks to compete in the education industry. Microsoft’s approach to CorePC is to transform a full Windows desktop into a modular, customizable system while retaining support for legacy applications and workflows as needed. This strategy could allow Microsoft to create a version of Windows that competes with Chromebooks in operating system size, performance, and features.

Microsoft is also reportedly exploring a “silicon-optimized” version of CorePC, which focuses on AI capabilities and vertically integrated hardware and software similar to Apple Silicon. AI-based features under development include context-aware tooltips, object and text recognition in images, and dedicated hardware support for certain AI features. Tech enthusiasts and industry experts alike are looking forward to more announcements and events for the highly anticipated Windows 12, as plans and features are subject to change before launch.
