VIP List: Twitter secretly promotes the accounts of some celebrities and politicians

In general, such VIP accounts 35. They enjoy greater visibility in feeds, and engineers have reportedly even gone through code changes to make them look better in the For You tab.

Who is on the list?

Platformer reports that this secret list of privileged users has changed over time. The publication did not release all the names it could verify in order to protect the source of the leaked documents, as the changes may be related to employees who have access to each version.

Among them, in addition to Elon Musk:

  • The account of NBA player LeBron James.
  • Deputy Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
  • Twitter investor Marc Andreessen.
  • Tesla Community Account.
  • Page of US President Joe Biden.
  • The accounts of @dril, comedian Jaboukie Young-White, and YouTube blogger MrBeast have also grown in popularity.
  • The same goes for the conservative accounts of Ben Shapiro and @Catturd2, whom Rolling Stone recently called the “king of MAGA tweets” (i.e. pro-Trump).
  • Accounts of journalists Matt Iglesias, Glenn Greenwald, Noah Smith and Adrian Wojnarowski can also be found here.

The platformer writes that the VIP list was “initially created to monitor the activities of influential Twitter users” as the company sought to dispel suspicions that it had imposed “shadow bans” on certain users to reduce their visibility on the platform. But It is not clear why these particular pages made it to the list and why some were not.. It may be, but now it’s clear why the Twitter algorithm so often recommends tweets from certain users.

Interestingly, Musk has repeatedly promised to make Twitter’s recommendation algorithms open. He also said that soon only paid Twitter Blue followers will appear in the For You algorithmic stream. It is unclear whether the change will also affect the VIP list of users who receive regular broadcast privileges, but some accounts on the list, such as Joe Biden and MrBeast, are currently verified but do not pay for Twitter Blue.
