UN launches network to study increasing disappearances of migrants in America

The network will be managed Global Data Institute IOM, which has overseen the Missing Migrants Project for nearly a decade, is a similar tool for counting these victims of migratory routes globally.

Statistics from the Missing Migrants project show that in 2022, at least 1433 migrants on their way to other places, the highest since the beginning of these statistics in 2014.

“The lack of safe and regular routes is often origin of these tragedies“, said Global Data Institute director Coco Warner, who pointed out that the new US network is “committed to sharing trusted data to contribute to evidence-based policy.”

At least between 2014 and 2022 7495 migrants died in the regionwhere some of the most dangerous routes run between Mexico and USAin the Caribbean Sea (many try to cross it in small boats) or in the jungles of Darien, one of the most isolated areas of the continent, connecting South America with Central America.
