Last week we reported that Lenovo may end its Legion smartphone business. It’s really official now, as a Lenovo representative confirmed the incident in a statement to Android Authority. The company is closing the Legion gaming phone business as part of a broader business transformation and consolidation of its gaming portfolio.
A Lenovo representative said in a statement: “As a leader in gaming devices and solutions, Lenovo is committed to advancing the gaming category in a variety of form factors and focusing on where it can bring the most value to the global gaming community.”
Lenovo entered the gaming smartphone segment with the first Legion Pro in 2020. The company launched the Legion Phone Duel 2 in 2021 and the Legion Y70 last August. The smartphones come with some innovative features, including side-floating selfie cameras, dedicated cooling fans, and dual charging ports. According to reports, Lenovo laid off some workers at its facility and transferred others to lines of business such as Lenovo’s tablet division.
With the debut of Lenovo’s Legion phones, the gaming smartphone industry was left with the ASUS ROG Phone series, Nubia Red Magic series and Xiaomi Black Shark phones. Even Black Shark seems to be struggling, but ASUS is staying strong as it prepares for the global launch of the ROG Phone 7 on April 13.
The bridge between dedicated gaming smartphones and ordinary flagship phones is getting narrower in terms of hardware firepower. However, gaming phones still have dedicated launch buttons, heat dissipation system, etc. features are available.
