HP is updating its laptop portfolio aimed at mainstream use in small and large businesses. The devices get the latest processors from both Intel and AMD.
HP updates its mainstream business laptops. At its Amplify conference in Chicago, the company is showing both new EliteBooks and new ProBooks. In both cases, the focus is on the more accessible models: the 800 series and 600 series for EliteBook and the 400 series for ProBook.
It’s immediately noticeable that HP has at least as much love for AMD as it does for Intel. AMD CEO Lisa Su’s extended appearance at the conference shows that it’s mutual and stands in stark contrast to Intel’s short video message there. As a customer, you can choose between Intel systems and AMD-based computers in all categories. If the type number of the HP laptop ends with a ‘0’, like the new HP Elite 860 G10, it is Intel Inside. The HP Elite 865 is the variant powered by AMD.
A total of seven refreshed laptops appear in the HP EliteBook 800 and 805 families: the large 16-inch HP Elite 860/5, the 14-inch HP Elite 840/5 and the entry-level 14-inch HP Elite 830/ 5. With the HP Elite x360 830, Intel is getting an exclusive device: a laptop with a foldable screen. There is no AMD variant of it.
On the Intel side, HP unsurprisingly opts for thirteenth processors Raptor Lake-Generation. You have the choice between U and P processors. The AMD laptops are configurable with AMD Ryzen 7000 mobile chips. AMD has made a little soup of these chips by adding previous-gen CPUs to the family, but HP notes that the devices can actually be configured with processors based on the latest Zen 4 architecture. The devices have integrated graphics functions and are equipped with up to 64 GB of RAM.
The 600 family is the entry-level line for EliteBook. In this category we find five laptops: again three with Intel and two with AMD. These laptops have specs that are a notch lower. At AMD, this is characterized by the integration of AMD Ryzen 7000 chips based on the slightly older Zen 3 architecture. Intel again has Raptor Lake chips to choose from. 64 GB RAM is also possible in this family.
Specifically, HP is launching a 15.6-inch EliteBook 650/5, a 14-inch EliteBook 650/5, and a 13.3-inch EliteBook 630 with exclusive Intel on board.
With ProBook, HP focuses more on SMBs. The manufacturer relies on an absolutely fair division in this category: We see an HP ProBook 450/5 with a 15.6-inch screen diagonal and a 14-inch HP ProBook 440/5. That’s a total of four devices, not including an exclusive Intel model.
The Intel laptops are configurable with P and U chips from the Raptor Lake series. At AMD, HP is once again relying on the Zen 3 Ryzen processors. Configurations up to and including 32 GB RAM are possible.
HP insists on the integration of HP Presence. It’s the brand name for video conferencing features found on all of the manufacturer’s business laptops. The technology that falls under this is designed to simplify video calls and comes with a certain quality guarantee.
The laptops are also equipped with HP Wolf Security. We wrote earlier that HP wants to position itself as a security specialist, and the consolidation of a security offering under the Wolf brand name has been the most visible expression of this since 2021. It’s also worth noting that all HP business laptops undergo MIL-STD testing, including drop testing.
HP shares international pricing and availability for a selection of the newly announced devices:
With the announcement, HP offers an updated business offer in an attractive price range. These devices do not belong to the ultimate top of the business spectrum such as the HP DragonFly series, but are intended for the general public. We are very interested in the 805 series with Zen 4 AMD on board.
It’s also nice to see that AMD is now treated more or less equally with Intel. Rightly so, because on a technical level, Ryzen chips are certainly in no way inferior to their Intel competitors. On the contrary: Zen 4 processors are the most advanced laptop CPUs you can find today.
