The supply of storage solutions connected to the PCIe Gen5 interface is still limited. And it’s surprising given the support for the latest processor platforms from Intel and AMD. Even if it’s in drops, at least they keep coming, and the latest is the HOF Extreme 50 SSD from Chinese manufacturer Galax, which just launched in its country of origin.
Like all drives that have arrived so far, the HOF Extreme 50 SSD uses a Phison E26 controller. It supports the latest version of the NVMe protocol and includes the specialist’s patented CoXProcessor technology, which improves performance, energy efficiency, AI-enabled storage and latency. You know, on an SSD the key part is the controller And until solutions from giants like Samsung and Western Digital arrive, it looks like it will be the one most integrators use.
The Galax combines the Phison chip with Micron 232-layer 3D NAND flash memory and the addition of 4 GB of LPDDR4 DRAM, which acts as a cache to move the most accessible data. Its format is the popular M.2 2280.
The unit achieves a sequential speed of up to 10,000 MB/s read and 9,500 MB/s write. Random 4K performance peaks at 1,500,000 / 1,250,000 read/write IOPS. The maximum strength rating is 1,400 TBW (Minimum number of bytes written) and its warranty will be five years like other PCIe 5.0 SSDs.
Another exceptional aspect of this model is its the cooling system. You already know that with increased power and reduced size comes increased operating temperature. And not a little. They therefore need at least one set of heatsinks or, as in this case, a special system with copper fins for heat dissipation and a small active fan with a 4-pin PWM power supply that can automatically adjust its speed according to temperature.
The HOF Extreme 50 SSD is available in two versions with 1 or 2 TB capacity storage space. Its price is 2,499 yuan, $363 to change. Galax has confirmed an international launch in the coming weeks and a new range with even higher performance that will exceed 12 Gbits per second.
