Pay without a gate? Rio de Janeiro innovates in three state cities

This Friday, March 31, Brazil will introduce the first toll without barriers. The technology, called Free Flow, has been approved by ANTT (National Land Transportation Agency) and will operate in the three cities of Rio de Janeiro, on Highway BR-101, between Rio and Santos. The system does not use gates and facilitates traffic on motorways.

Drivers will be able to pay via TAG or via PIX and credit card. Anyone who evades or forgets to pay will be fined. a cAutomatic work will be carried out at three points:

  • Paraty: at km 538 BR-101;
  • Mangaratiba: at km 447 BR-101;
  • Itaguai: at km 414 BR-101.

View prices and opening hours

  • From 6:00 am Monday to 18:00 Friday, the fare will be 4.10 reais for cars. On weekends and holidays, the price rises to 6.80 reais;
  • Commercial vehicles will have the same rate, which may increase depending on the number of axles.
  • Ambulances, service vehicles, motorcycles, scooters, tricycles and bicycles will not have to pay.

Okay, but how does it work?

The system works through sensors and the driver does not need to stop to pay. The main form of collection will be through TAGs attached to the windshield. (Non-stop, Veloe, etc.). Whoever uses the TAG will receive a fare discount ranging from 5% to 70%, depending on how many times the driver passes through the toll booth. That is, if you use TAG and need to use the toll regularly, you will have a great discount.

What to do without a tag?

Who does not have a TAG, maybe make payments through WhatsApp and through the CCR RioSP website or app, with a credit card or PIX. The system automatically recognizes the license plate of the vehicle if payment is made in this way.

CCR Rio-SP makes it clear that the system has been tested to prevent payment evasion. Drivers who fail to pay the toll will receive a fine of 195.23 reais and five points in the CNH (national driving licence). The idea of barrier-free tolls is interesting and will certainly favor driving in high traffic areas on motorways. It remains to be seen whether it will work correctly as intended by the CCR and whether drivers will adapt to the novelty.
