Microsoft Azure is under fire in Europe. In the summer of 2021, three European cloud providers approached the European Commission to sue the cloud giant. The case appears to be a comparison between Microsoft and the plaintiffs. Google is blatantly getting involved in the debates and hitting its big competitor hard.
“There is no doubt that Microsoft is taking an anti-competitive stance in the cloud,” Amit Zavery told Reuters. “They are abusing their dominance in on-premises business and Office 365 and Windows to tie down Azure cloud services. This makes it difficult for customers to have a choice,” sounds Google Cloud’s distinctive slash.
The fact that the charges against the French OHV and two other European cloud providers will end in a settlement is also not a good thing for Zavery. “They are selectively buying up those who complain without making the terms available to everyone. It shows how much market power they have, that they can do these things individually.”
This opinion is also shared by the European cloud association CISPE, which also fears that nothing will change with an agreement. “Politicians have to look at it holistically. An agreement with one or two vendors will not solve the larger problem,” continues Zavery.

Microsoft limited itself to a brief reaction to Google’s dig. “We believe in the success of the European cloud community,” was the diplomatic response to Reuters. Microsoft already made some concessions to its licensing model in the summer to make it cheaper for external cloud providers to offer Azure services. For the time being, these concessions do not appear to be enough to extinguish the fire. Microsoft also seems to be facing a new charge in Germany.
