Sponsors of the long-running video game expo E3 closed the 2023 events, announcing on the event’s website on Thursday that they will “re-evaluate” the future of the show. The move comes as larger game players announcing their own digital gatherings, and after reports that titans like Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony are planning to withdraw from the event.

“Show promoter ReedPop has announced that E3 2023 will not take place as planned this June, and both physical and digital events have been cancelled,” the show’s website said.

“Together with the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), both parties will reassess the future of E3.”

ESA has sponsored the grand meeting every year since 1995, usually in Los Angeles, but canceled the event in 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak and held a virtual version in 2021. Last July, citing a show that would be “recognizably epic” among sponsors, publishers, developers, creators, and licensors, they announced plans to return to a physical event at the Los Angeles Convention Center in June 2023.

But according to a report in the Los Angeles Times, ReedPop’s Kyle Marsden-Kish cited a lack of “playable demos” from interested companies. Although the cancellation was a “difficult decision”, Marsden-Kish said, “we had to do what was right for the industry and what was right for E3,” according to the newspaper.
