Thanks to services like Google Drive, cloud storage has become one of the most convenient and fastest ways to share files, access them from any device, and create backup copies of what we cannot and do not want to lose at any time. Sometimes I think we put too much trust in these types of services, although the truth is that their usefulness cannot be doubted.

I say that sometimes we are overconfident by remembering, for example, the problems experienced by Andrew Spinks. CEO of Re-Logic and co-creator of the blockbuster indie game Terraria, which caused Google to suddenly suspend several of the studio’s personal and professional accounts. In that case, thanks to public pressure and the arrival of Terraria on Google Stadia was seriously threatenedThe situation was eventually resolved satisfactorily, but one can easily imagine the dire consequences of such a blackout, and even more so if the situation is ultimately not resolved.

However, this is not common. the vast majority of Google Drive users have and maintain access to their files without issueand it is very rare that Google will terminate an account unless it is because it has violated the terms of service. To avoid this problem, like any other service, the company promptly informs about what can be done, what are the limits and what actions can lead to the blocking of the account or limitation of its functions.

So we agree that it is necessary to follow the rules and respect the limits, but from what we read at Ars Technica, it seems that Google has not fully communicated them. Specifically, and although not stated in the Terms of Service, Google Drive has a limit of five million files per accountwhich includes both the free ones, which can be understood, and the Google Workspace ones, i.e. the paid ones.

For ordinary mortals, five million files may seem like a lot, but there are a few cases where this number is more attainable than we think. According to the media, users (or at least some of them) who have stored more than five million files have been receiving messages for several weeks that they cannot create and upload more files until they downgrade your account. the limit again.

At the moment, there is no official communication from the company about this new Google Drive limit, although some users confirm that in a “private” way, the company’s technical support staff confirmed that this is not a bug, but a limit that Google wants to impose on the service.
