CEO Google, Sundar Pichaiannounced that the company plans to update its experimental artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot soon, bard. In an interview with The New York Times Hard Fork podcast, Pichai acknowledged that Bard is limited compared to other available chatbots such as ChatGPT from OpenAI and bing from Microsoft.
The company’s statement was a response to The Information.
Pichai explained that Bard uses a lightweight and efficient version of the LaMDA dialog language model, but that Google is working on updating it with the newer PaLM model. According to Google, PaLM is larger in scope and better at tasks like logical reasoning and solving coding problems.
Although Bard was released to the public on March 21, it did not receive the same recognition as its competitors. In tests done on several specialized vehicles, Bard’s responses were found to be less fluent and imaginative than those of its competitors and lacked reliable data sources.
Pichai acknowledged that Google was wary of building more efficient chatbots and suggested that this could be one reason Bard isn’t as advanced as other companies’ chatbots. He also stressed that AI in general is an area that needs to be regulated, but suggested that the best approach would be to apply existing rules rather than create new laws.
Meanwhile, concerns continue to grow among industry insiders about the rapid development of AI. Recently, Elon Musk and other AI researchers called for a six-month hiatus from developing these systems, citing immediate and existential risks.
Pichai acknowledged the importance of these concerns and said they should be treated with caution and discussed. He emphasized the need to anticipate potential problems and evolve to deal with them, whether or not AI achieves what is called artificial general intelligence or AGI.
While it’s still unclear when updates to Bard will be released, Pichai appears determined to improve Google’s chatbot to make it more functional and reliable for users.
