Russia will move its tactical nuclear weapons closer to Belarus’ western borders, the Russian ambassador in Minsk said Sunday, bringing them closer to NATO’s doorstep, likely to further escalate Moscow’s confrontation with the West.

On March 26, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

The two neighbors are formally part of a “union state” and have been negotiating further integration for many years. This process accelerated after Minsk allowed Moscow to use Belarusian territory to send troops to Ukraine last year.

The weapons “will be moved to the western border of our union state and will increase the chances of ensuring security,” said Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov.

“It will be done despite the uproar in Europe and the US.”

Gryzlov did not specify where the weapons would be placed, but confirmed that the depot would be completed by July 1 on Putin’s orders and then moved to western Belarus.

Belarus borders on Lithuania and Latvia in the north and Poland in the west. All of this is part of NATO’s eastern flank, which was reinforced with additional soldiers and military equipment after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The United States and other allies of Kyiv have expressed concern about the possibility of Russia sending tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, with President Joe Biden calling it “worrisome.”

President Alexander Lukashenko said on Friday that Belarus would also allow Russia to deploy intercontinental nuclear missiles there if necessary. (Reuters).
