Why shouldn’t astronauts going to the moon wear black clothes?

Our generation, postal mission Apollo, lived only videos and messages about how people set foot on the moon. But, finally, we will be able to accompany missions into space, to our satellite, and who knows, even to Mars.
A NASA prepares for these new missions and has recently released costumes that astronauts will use Artemis 3 on a future missionscheduled for 2025. Unlike the usual ones, these suits are black and caused a certain stir. But there’s a simple explanation for this, and why astronauts can’t wear a black suit in space.
After many decades, humanity will return to space exploration. Thanks to the Artemis mission, which had its first successful missions, we will finally be able to make new efforts on the Moon and, who knows, on other planets. And to dress our future astronauts, Axiom Space designed the costumes and presented them. But instead of the traditional white, they came out in a very stylish black, presented during the event.
“NASA’s partnership with Axiom is critical to landing astronauts on the Moon and maintaining America’s leadership in space. Based on NASA’s years of research and experience, the next-generation Axiom suits will not only enable the first woman to walk on the Moon, but will open up more people than ever before to explore and conduct scientific research on the Moon.NASA administrator Bill Nelson said. Our partnership invests in America, supports workers and demonstrates another example of America’s technical ingenuity that will enable NASA and the commercial space industry to compete and win in the 21st century..”
But the black color isn’t revolutionary, it’s just Axion Space’s attempt to hide the details of its costume from competitors. Thus, the brand intends to prevent copying the innovations created for its suit.
This new suit will only be used on the Artemis 3 mission, which explores the cold southern part of the Moon for the first time. And that’s one of the reasons you can’t wear black suits when exploring space: extreme temperatures.
Astronauts will be announced this Monday (3) to be part of the Artemis 3 mission. These new space travelers will need suits that can withstand the hostility of space. Our satellite, although visited before, has never received astronauts in the southern part. Unlike on Earth, on the Moon we have no way to protect ourselves from solar radiation, where temperatures range from 200°C in the light to -180°C in the shade. Maintaining thermal stability is essential to survival, leading to special reflective and insulating suits (air-filled); thanks to this combination, suit users can be protected from temperature changes.
And just as your black T-shirt absorbs more heat on hot days and colder on cold days, suits should be white precisely so that this variation does not deprive the astronaut of the opportunity to pass through these places.
And it’s new suits new suits contain some innovations, such as: improvements in the knee joints, allowing you to squat; lighter clothing that allows walking long distances and is less tiring for the wearer; adapts to different body types, men and women; a helmet with an extended field of vision and boots designed for walking, not just jumping; Heating system.
So while this has a big impact on the mission, the explanation for the suits being white is pretty simple, but the other implementations are what really add new possibilities to space exploration.
