Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has sent his top foreign policy adviser to negotiate with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on possible peace talks to end the war in Ukraine, CNN Brazil reported.
“It would be an exaggeration to say that the doors are open (for peace talks), but it is not true to say that they are completely closed,” Ambassador Celso Amorim told CNN Brazil in an interview posted on his website.
Amorim, who was Lula’s foreign minister from 2003 to 2010, said he met with Putin for an hour Thursday at the Kremlin on a previously unannounced trip.
Two government officials told Reuters that Amorim was stopping in Paris on his way back to Brazil, but did not provide details of his commitment.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry declined to comment on Amorim’s trip. The president’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
Lula proposed the creation of a group of countries to mediate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which are waging a war that has been going on for more than a year.
Amorim said he had lunch with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who will visit Brasilia on April 17, and was received by Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov.
“There is no magic solution, but the time will come when one side or the other realizes that the cost of war – not only political, but also human and economic – will be higher than the cost of war. the cost of necessary concessions for the world,” Amorim told CNN in Brazil.
“I feel like that time has not come yet, but it may come sooner than expected.”
