The storage specialist Western Digital falls victim to a hack. To protect the services, it has taken its cloud environment offline.
According to a press release, unauthorized third parties have gained access to some systems. The incident happened on March 26th. After the discovery, Western Digital brought in security and forensic scientists, as well as the police, to conduct a thorough investigation.
WD is not commenting at this time as the investigation is still in its early stages. “Based on the investigations carried out so far, we assume that an unauthorized person may have stolen data from our systems. We are working to understand the amount of data received.”
To prevent further problems, Western Digital has taken certain online services offline. According to WD, this is a “proactive reason to secure operations.” As of this weekend, users are experiencing issues with My Cloud, My Cloud Home, My Cloud Home (Duo), My Cloud OS5, SanDisk ibi, and SanDisk Ixpand Wireless Charger.
According to the public statement, WD is doing everything it can to quickly bring its infrastructure and related services back online. It’s not clear for now how long everything will remain offline (or badly online). Western Digital does not share a timeline, and additional information about the hack is fairly sparse.
