In January and February, Apple halted production of its M2 chips due to disappointing Mac device sales.
A global recession is putting pressure on Mac device sales this year. According to a new report (via The Elec), Apple halted production of the M2 chips at TSMC in January and February. In the meantime, production would have restarted, albeit at half the volume originally estimated.
Apple introduced the M2 chip in June 2022 at its annual WWDC conference. The 2022 model MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13-inch were the first two devices to include the chip. New MacBook Pros were added to this list earlier this year, with a faster M2 Pro and M2 Max and another surprising new Mac mini.
According to the report, it will take some time for sales to normalize and for production capacity to be restored.
In early June at WWDC, Apple is expected to announce the new M3 chips, the first chips to be baked at 3 nanometers at TSMC. The Apple M2 and M1 chips were still baked at 5 nanometers at TSMC. A smaller process guarantees better energy efficiency and potentially higher performance. WWDC starts on June 5th.
