Britain’s regulator has fined the social network TikTok nearly $16 million for improper use of children’s personal data.

This was reported by The Independent, Ukrinform reports.

As noted, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has sanctioned a number of violations of the Personal Data Protection Act, including misuse of children’s data.

The office said the social network has not received approval from parents of an estimated 1.4 million British children under the age of 13 who use the platform.

“There are laws to ensure that our children are safe in the digital world as well as in the physical world. TikTok has not complied with these laws,” said John Edwards, UK Information Commissioner.

As a result, nearly one million children under the age of 13 gained access to the platform, and TikTok illegally collected and used their personal data.

As reported, the Australian government has banned the use of the Chinese app TikTok on all devices owned by government officials.

In December 2022, the upper house of Congress unanimously passed a bill banning the use of the TikTok app on government phones and devices due to security concerns and the social network’s affiliation with Chinese manufacturers.

TikTok has also been banned on official devices in Canada, Belgium, India, Denmark, Czech Republic, UK and New Zealand. A similar ban is planned in the Netherlands.

At the same time, TikTok vehemently denied allegations that it had handed over user data to the Chinese government.
