There are growing concerns in the country that the Chinese government may be using ByteDance’s media platform to collect user data and advance its political agenda.
Australian Attorney General Mark Dreyfuss said the ban will come into effect as soon as possible. According to him, exceptions are possible only on a case-by-case basis and subject to the observance of appropriate safety measures.
TikTok said it was “extremely disappointed” by the Australian government’s decision, describing the move as “due to politics, not facts”.
“There is no evidence that TikTok poses any threat to the safety of Australians and should not be treated any differently than other social media platforms,” said Lee Hunter, general manager of TikTok Australia and New Zealand.
Thus, all members of the so-called Five Eyes intelligence sharing network consisting of Australia, Canada, USA, UK and New Zealand banned the app from government devices. France, Belgium and the European Commission have announced similar bans.
