HPE announces that it is introducing block and file storage services on a brand new Alletra foundation as part of its GreenLake service model.
HPE introduces file storage and block storage services to its GreenLake offering. Both solutions are built on Alletra hardware and should offer customers flexibility and ease of use on the same level as the public cloud. In addition to the new storage capabilities, HPE is also introducing Disaster Recovery and Backup and Recovery for GreenLake.
HPE GreenLake for Block Storage and HPE GreenLake for File Storage are actually two flavors of the same offering. In both cases, you as a customer buy a storage solution that is based on a disaggregated architecture. Specifically, this affects HPE Alletra servers, of which you can configure compute and storage separately. It is therefore possible to add more capacity or more processing power to both block storage and file storage without having to scale up the other parameter.
HCI in the background
The Alletra compute and storage servers are connected via an IP-based NVMe control layer. The whole back is basically based on some kind of HCI model with an abstraction layer on top. Within GreenLake, customers buy the storage and they see it. HPE manages the underlying infrastructure. As a refresher, you pay for it via a monthly subscription and it’s in your own data center or with a colocation partner. Finally, the essence of HPE Greenlake is the convenience of the cloud, but in a private data center.
As a customer, you manage everything from a central console. You also order and both storage services. HP insists on this centralized simplicity because it is the cornerstone of its claim to meet the convenience of the cloud.
Save and recover
You can also purchase HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery and HPE GreenLake Backup and Recovery through this console. You activate both services at the push of a button and then pay monthly. You don’t have to configure, install or patch anything, you get a full SaaS experience. The disaster recovery solution is based on the acquisition of Zerto. HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery protects both on-premises and cloud workloads.
The block and file storage services are readily available, as is the backup and restore solution. You can purchase HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery in June.
