The formal presentation of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is still a few months away, which, in a huge surprise, will take place at WWDC 2023 next June, in an event where we still don’t know if the main role will fall to Apple’s expected augmented reality viewer. Just a few days ago, we told you that the shadow of a new delay hangs over the expected announcement, but there are different opinions on this, as according to other analysts, plans for a June launch are continuing.
If the Spectator is finally announced, it will undoubtedly capture all the prominence of the event, although expectations for it do not seem to be as high as one might wish in Cupertino, as there is no doubt that they will know how to sell it as something revolutionary even if it’s temporary, at first it leaves many of us feeling like we need such a device in our lives. This effect can last for minutes or forever, it’s variable, but the initial impact will undoubtedly be loud.
Otherwise, in the absence of such notification, likely much of the importance will fall on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, future versions of the iPhone and iPad operating systems. We still don’t know much about them, but after the initial rumors that it would be minor revisions, theories began to gain weight that this would not be the case in the end and that very interesting news would come from them (although, strangely enough, the analysts who point out in this sense do not mention in in this respect the only specific data).
Be that as it may, remaining on the list of devices that can upgrade to the latest version for another year is always good news, which finds its counterpart in all those that Apple considers to have completed their life cycle and therefore no longer offer updates. And today, thanks to a leak echoed by MacRumors, we have list of devices that will not be able to update to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.
First, as far as iPhones go, here are the models that won’t be able to make the jump to iOS 17:
As happened with the previous OS change, we see that there are two generations that are left out of the update. It’s troubling because it makes you wonder if Apple is considering reducing the lifespan of the iPhone by leaving them without operating system updates. We’ll have to wait and see if this is confirmed, and if so, what happens next year with iOS 18. However, remember that the European Union intends to introduce a lifetime period (via OS and software updates) that could limit Apple’s intentions in this regard .
In the case of an Apple tablet, these are the models that would remain anchored in iPadOS 16:
Here, what we see for the first time is the loss of support for the iPad Pro, the highest version of the tablet from Cupertino. This is normal and sooner or later it had to come, but even so, it has a certain symbolism that will no doubt not be funny to those who still use these models.
