IBM launches its z16 mainframes and LinuxOne servers in a new format. Both solutions are now available in single frame or rack mount configurations. The standard dimensions offer more flexibility for customers who want to build the hardware into their data center. The rack format also offers more convenience in a context where a partner wants to offer the solution to a new customer.

LinuxOne and z16

The IBM z16 is a mainframe built around the powerful Telum chip. IBM launched the mainframe last year, followed by the new LinuxOne servers based on the z16 mainframe. IBM builds the hardware around a fully proprietary architecture that offers several advantages over ARM or x86. IBM claims its solution is more economical, uses less space, and handles AI workloads better. The manufacturer also relies on reliability with an availability guarantee of 99.99999 percent.

The new rack servers IBM z16 and LinuxOne are available from May 17th. Combining a relatively niche server architecture with physical flexibility, the solution fits into a future where users no longer choose one-size-fits-all, but the computing power that best suits specific workloads.
