As noted by Android Police, this feature is already present in other applications where navigation is critical to user success: electronic games. Whenever there is a map in play, it will show an indicator of various points and/or their positions as you move around the map.

Although Google Maps has a button to re-center the map at your current location, the pin will not necessarily be near that position. The only way to find the missing pin is to zoom out until it’s found again, which can be frustrating.

The Google Maps app will now offer a visual indicator of a pin, like in electronic games, when it disappears from the home screen. This way you can explore areas near the pin without losing your bearings. A pin indicator will appear at the edge of the screen, indicating the direction you need to swipe to find it.

Also, according to Android Police, tapping a pin will move Google Maps to the marked location. The same feature will apply to the people you select in the app when using the Google Maps location sharing feature.
