The Maryland Attorney’s Office (USA) released this Wednesday a 456-page report documenting sexual assault committed by 156 representatives of the Catholic clergy against over 600 child victims in the Archdiocese of Baltimore over the past 8 decades.

“From the 1940s to 2002, more than a hundred priests and other employees of the archdiocese engaged in horrific and repeated child abuse most vulnerable in their communities,” the report says.

“Again and again, members of the church hierarchy have steadfastly refused to admit to allegations of child sexual abuse for as long as possible,” he added.

The document has been published with amendments that cover names and references by which almost a hundred people can be identified. The list of alleged rapists includes dozens of priests, monks and at least two religious.

“The overwhelming scale of the abuses in itself reveals the guilt of the church hierarchy,” the report says. Being given the opportunity to continue bullying children is amazing,” he adds.

State Attorney General Anthony Brown said his office launched a grand jury investigation in 2018 into the archdiocese, which has about 518,000 members in 145 wards.

“The investigation examined allegations of sexual crimes against minors committed by clergy, seminarians, deacons and other members of the archdiocese,” the prosecutor added.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore in western Maryland has about 550 priests, 160 deacons, 55 monks and 803 nuns, and operates 5 hospitals, approximately thirty nursing homes, 20 diocesan, parochial and private schools, and four universities.

Similarly, the investigation extended to “the efforts of the leaders of the Catholic Church to hide and hide this sexual abusewith hundreds of thousands of documents dating back to the 1940s and submitted by the archdiocese,” Brown said.

Before a judge authorized the release of the prosecutor’s report on Tuesday, Archbishop William Laurie released a message urging Catholics to pray for survivors of abuse.

“Most of all at this moment I pause to acknowledge and confirm that heinous and terrible insult is the subject of a prosecution investigation, represents a serious betrayal, and it has had devastating consequences for the surviving victims,” Laurie said.

SNAP, the largest network for survivors of Catholic clergy sexual abuse, said in a statement that the Maryland District Attorney’s report “contains more names of rapists than church officials have disclosed.”

The group demanded that Archbishop Laurie explain “why his list is not perfect, and that he answer what church officials have covered up and why.”
