A Microsoft officially announced this Tuesday (4) Thunderbolt 4 Surface Dock, a few hours after the device leaked. Microsoft’s new docking station will retail for $299.99 (about R$1,516.90). will connect via USB-C rather than the proprietary Surface Connect port. The new Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock will support devices outside of Surface for the first time. You can connect to it via USB-C, and it supports data transfer speeds up to 40Gbps and 96W charging thanks to Thunderbolt 4. There is one USB-C port on the front next to the USB-C port. no SD card slot. The back of the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock has two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, an audio port, and a security lock slot.

While this doesn’t mean an immediate end to the Surface Connect port, it’s clear that Microsoft is moving in that direction. The company’s latest Surface devices, such as the Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Pro 9, feature USB-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4, as well as a proprietary Surface Connect port. It now seems likely that we’ll soon see a Surface device ditch the Surface Connect port in favor of just USB-C. Microsoft only launched the Surface 3 with a Micro USB charging port instead of the proprietary Surface Connect charging port.

It took Microsoft a while to bring USB-C and even Thunderbolt 4 to their Surface devices. USB-C finally arrived on the Surface Pro 7 in 2019, followed two years later by the Surface Pro 8 with Thunderbolt support. In 2020, Microsoft stated that Surface devices did not ship with Thunderbolt at the time due to security concerns.

The product is already available for sale on the official Microsoft website.
