At least Tornado kills five in Missouriin the southeastern United States, when rescuers searched destroyed homes and businesses in rural areas in search of new victims.

The deaths were reported in Bollinger County, where several local agencies were conducting search and rescue efforts, Sheriff Casey Graham said on Facebook.

Photos posted on social media from Glen Allen, Missouri, a city 177 kilometers south of St. Louis, showed badly damaged houses, downed trees and power lines and rubble covering paths and gardens.

“It’s serious to see people’s houses have no roofs and their houses are disappearing,” Missouri Highway Patrol Sergeant Clark Parrot said after inspecting the damage.

“We have work to do, but we can do it.”

Parrot said that several people were found. injured, but did not give an exact number.

According to the National Weather Service, experts said the tornado touched down in the area around 3:30 am local time.

More than 10 tornadoes have been registered.

It was one of more than a dozen tornadoes spotted overnight, the service said.

In Marble Hill, 3 miles east of Glen Allen, Chris Huffman, 45, said he ran to his basement with his wife and two daughters after hearing tornado sirens.

It was completely dark outside and dark clouds, strong wind and rainand lightning over Glen Allen to the west, where the tornado struck, Huffman said.

“It was amazing,” he said from his Munchies sandwich shop, where he prepared meals for rescuers and victims.

“We hear the roar of everything. It was so close.”

Huffman said his home and business were unaffected, but he had friends in Glen Allen who were hard hit.

“You feel powerless,” he said.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson tweeted that he plans to visit the county, but did not say when, while expressing gratitude for the work of the rescuers and residents who helped their neighbors.

Some 24 million Americans in Indiana and Ohio from the south to Mississippi and Alabama north were under possible tornado threat and severe electrical storms.
