Biden administration blames Trump for chaos in leaving Afghanistan

The Joe Biden government released a report Thursday blaming the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021) for not developing any plan to facilitate the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan after 20 years of war.

According to a summary of the document released by the White House, the Trump administration has not provided Biden with any plans on how to effect a troop withdrawal or how to evacuate US citizens in the country, as well as their Afghan allies.

“In fact, when President Biden came to power” in January 2021, there was no plan, the document explains.

At a press conference, John Kirby, one of the White House officials, focused on Trump’s unpreparedness and assured that the decisions made by the former president “limited” the options available to Biden.

Among other things, Kirby cited Trump’s decision to reduce the presence of US troops in Afghanistan to 2,500, the lowest since the start of the war in 2001, and said he had not invested enough resources in the visa system.

Biden’s team took advantage of the months before he arrived at the White House after winning the November 2020 election to ask Trump’s advisers for drafted Afghanistan evacuation plans, the spokesman said, but they found nothing.

This Thursday, the White House sent a full version of the report to Congress with classified information and analysis of the US preparations for the withdrawal of troops, marked by a terrorist attack at the Kabul airport, which is claimed by a terrorist group. Islamic State (IS) and where about 170 Afghan civilians and 13 US soldiers were killed.

The chaotic withdrawal of troops in August 2021 meant a drop in Biden’s rating, who was unable to withdraw all the Afghans who fought on the side of Washington from Afghanistan and had to watch the Taliban appropriate American military equipment worth billions of dollars.

The Republican opposition in Congress has been critical of the Biden administration’s handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan and has been asking for months to report to them, which finally happened this Thursday.

The purpose of the document is to draw lessons from what happened in Afghanistan for the future. It was prepared in recent months by various government departments, including the Department of Defense and the State Department.
