The notes will appear in a dedicated tab, and the feed will look very similar to what you see on other social networks like Twitter. For example, on individual posts, you’ll see familiar icons like Like, Replies, and Share (which Substack will refer to as “re-stacks”). When asked if there would be a character limit in Notes, Substack spokesperson Helen Tobin declined to share details about it.
The Notes tab will also have two separate ribbons: Home and Subscription. According to Tobin, the home feed will show content from sources in his “expanded network of substacks,” while the subscription will show content from “a smaller universe of sources associated with your subscriptions.”
Similarities to Twitter
Despite the similarity to social networking site Birdie, Substack’s co-founders argue that because the company’s business model is subscription-based, its platform offers healthier incentives for posting quality content rather than things optimized for viral distribution. “Here people are rewarded for respecting the trust and attention of the audience.“, they say. “The ultimate goal of this platform is to turn casual readers into paying subscribers.“
Substack seems to be aware that allowing people to post messages like tweets can lead to trolling, and the co-founders are vaguely promising that people will be able to protect themselves from them. “As Notes develops, we will focus on building a system that allows people to control the contours and boundaries of their subscription universe, making it easy to keep trolls out and even easier to let valuable contributors in.“, comment. Tobin declined to say more about what tools will be available in this system.
There are a lot of Twitter alternatives popping up lately, and while Twitter itself is getting worse every day, it remains one of the biggest social networks out there. However, with Notes, Substack is considered to be well positioned to attract people who are looking for a new place to publish, especially if those people want to build a subscription business on Substack itself; The creators of Twitter are still waiting for the Twitter Blue revenue sharing model promised by Elon Musk in February.
According to a Substack blog post posted on Wednesday, Notes will start rolling out “in the next few days” and everyone will have access to the new features, Tobin says.
