For at least three years, Tesla employees had access to videos recorded by electric cars’ cameras without their owners’ consent.
According to the Ukrinform correspondent, Reuters writes about it.
Between 2019 and 2022, a group of Tesla employees privately distributed the sometimes highly sensitive videos and images recorded by the cameras of company customers’ private cars via internal messengers, according to nine former employees.
In some videos, it is recorded that Tesla owners appear in disturbing situations.
“A former employee spoke about a video of a man approaching the car completely naked,” Reuters said.
Employees also distributed videos of collisions and traffic accidents.
“In a video from 2021, a Tesla was speeding through a residential area and crashing into a boy on a bike. “The boy flew in one direction and the bike flew the other way,” he said.
Reuters points out that Tesla’s terms of use specify the anonymity of all videos taken from the car’s cameras, and that there is no feature to attach clips to a particular car.
But seven former employees said the computer programs they use for work could indicate the location of the recording, potentially making it possible to identify the Tesla owner’s place of residence.
According to one of Reuters’ interlocutors, some of the videos were shot while the vehicles were parked and turned off.
The agency added that it contacted more than 300 former Tesla employees for this story, with some agreeing to comment on the anonymity condition. It is unknown at this time whether the employees are still there. tesla having unauthorized access to recordings from car cameras.
