Is PlayStation Vita 2 in development? One of the video game giants is getting ready a return to the handheld console businesswith a device that would be capable of running PS5 titles, according to rumors that hit the internet this week.
You probably remember how the enormous versatility of modern smartphones eventually toppled portable consoles, just as cheap cameras did. Nintendo suffered a lot to keep the DS in the catalog due to declining sales, and Sony fared much worse. The last device of its kind was the original Vita from 2012. It lasted just seven years on the market and was discontinued in 2019 with no plans for a successor.
But the handheld gaming market has turned upside down in the past two years. Yes, it can be played on a smartphone, but the experience is much less compared to a dedicated machine, no matter how powerful the mobile phone is.
The launch of a dozen portable consoles should not have gone unnoticed at Sony’s headquarters, where the resistance brought by Valve’s Steam Deck stands out, but also models from Chinese manufacturers such as AYA or One-Netbook. And in recent months, more have been added from Logitech, Razer, and recently the high-powered ASUS ROG Ally.
Nintendo has a Switch that – without being exactly a pocket machine – can perfectly cover gaming on the go and is actually the best seller on the market if you think about this type of functionality. But Sony is having none of it, and we don’t think it’s going to sit around anymore. The available information is not confirmed, but it makes sense.
Earlier in the week there were rumors of a “Vita 2” that would focus on cloud gaming and now Insider Gaming claims to have “exclusive” development of the codenamed portable console QLite. The console wouldn’t be a cloud streaming device, but would instead use remote gaminga feature that has been present since the PS4 and that Sony has been pushing in recent weeks to allow current and future games to be played on the PS5.
A Sony laptop would offer a more efficient experience to its owners, as it would probably include all the functions of the controller. Playstation DualSense. In fact, the first prototype is said to be a device that would look a lot like a PS5 controller, but with a huge 8-inch screen. It should have adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and what is expected from a handheld machine, volume buttons and speakers, a charging port and a high-performance wireless connection (Wi-Fi 6) for remote playback.
We’ll see. Sources say the PlayStation Vita 2 is slated to launch in 2024, ahead of the PS5 Pro home console.
