Complaints state that employees Tesla collected videos of vehicle owners and illegally shared, according to information released by Reuters this Thursday (6). The practice is said to have taken place between 2019 and 2022, when some of the company’s employees shared humorous, shocking or offensive videos on the internal messaging system.

In total, nine former employees reported to the communication facility that the videos were transmitted unauthorized to Tesla. The images included car crashes, road rage incidents, and even embarrassing moments. A former employee described a clip of a naked man walking towards a car.
Tesla vehicles use cameras to power their driver assistance systems, such as an autopilot that follows lane lines and tracks nearby vehicles. Cars also have a feature called Sentry modewhich captures any suspicious activity near a parked car.
Employees collected videos even from the garage
Employees of the company also shared videos taken in owners’ garages, especially if there was something notable there, such as a classic car. According to one source, workers found a white Lotus Espirit from a 1970s James Bond movie in the garage, bought by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in 2013 for about $1 million.
More than a dozen employees told Reuters about the incidents. Other former employees said they only saw images that were shared for legitimate work purposes, such as identifying the correct tags.
On Tesla’s website, the company claims that its camera system was “designed from the ground up to protect your privacyCamera footage is only shared with Tesla if owners choose to do so, the company says.
