Twitter eventually shut down its free API, which predictably caused many apps and websites to break. The company previously said it would end access in early February, but later delayed the move without providing an updated timeline.

But after announcing the new paid API levels last week, the company seems to have started upsetting thousands of developers who rely on its free developer tools. In the past few days, a number of app manufacturers and other services have reported that the Twitter API is no longer working. The outage appears to have started on Tuesday morning, Mashable, but many developers are still trying to figure out what’s going on, as Twitter doesn’t seem to have contacted most developers about the change.

Third-party app developers need to be paid

Twitter’s free API ended after the company abruptly changed its rules to ban third-party Twitter clients as part of a larger shift in developer strategy, but as we’ve previously reported, third-party clients are only a small percentage of developers who rely on the Twitter API. some researchers, bot developers and others.

For example, apps and websites that use the Twitter API to enable content sharing to and from Twitter know that this feature doesn’t work. WordPress said on Tuesday that it will no longer be able to access the API so websites cannot automatically post to Twitter.
