Samsung is scaling back chip production as customers build up large inventories after shortages during the coronavirus pandemic.

The chip giant Samsung reports in its preliminary quarterly figures that, according to Belga, the production of memory chips has “reduced to a reasonable level”. Operating profit fell 95 percent to 416 million euros in the quarter, the lowest level since 2009.

The entire chip industry has been watching Samsung for some time, which happily announced at the end of last year that it would continue to bake chips at a fast pace despite falling demand, according to other industry competitors. The result: huge surpluses that put downward pressure on prices for everyone.

Samsung has now decided to “significantly” reduce the production of memory chips, which should ultimately lead to rising prices again.

The fact that Samsung, as a large chip and electronics group, can still generate profits may have something to do with the successful launch of the Galaxy S23 smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in particular seems to be a huge hit, according to CNBC. Of all pre-orders worldwide for the Galaxy S23 series, 60 percent reserved the Ultra variant, the most expensive device from 1,399 euros incl. VAT.

Samsung will share more details later this month when it releases its full earnings report.
