Scientists from the University of Georgia and South Florida (USA) estimate that people will start living to age 140. PLOS ONE believes the researchers believe that the maximum lifespan has not yet been reached.

They were able to make such assumptions with the help of a mathematical model. So – Gompertz’s law of statistics. It shows that the death rate of a group increases exponentially with the age of that group. After the age of 50, the risk of death begins to double approximately every 10 years. The Gompertz Maximum Age (GMA) is referred to as the youngest age at which people reach a death plateau. This means that once a certain number is reached, the death rate no longer increases.

Several episodes of delay in the increase in mortality have been found historically. The first occurred among people born at the beginning of the second half of the 19th century. It is more pronounced in women than in men. During this period, GMA increased for about 5 years. The second, more important part, affected those born between 1910 and 1950. These are people who are now between 70 and 110 years old. For these cohorts, the GMA may increase by 10 years.

The mathematical model predicts that people born after 1950 should experience an even greater increase in GMA. Current longevity records will be broken after 2073, with some people living to 140. Source
