Star Wars will add three new movies, but not a trilogy

When talking about Star Wars, and even more so when the number three is mentioned, immediately, almost like a reflex, the word trilogy comes to mind. And it’s normal, of course, because the backbone of one of the most iconic sagas in the world of cinema, which has since crossed many other fields, It’s a trilogy of trilogiesDo you know, in release order, the original (Episodes IV to VI), the prequel (Episodes I to III) and the sequel? (episodes VII to IX). And yes, I’m putting it in question marks because we’re talking about Star Wars, so you never know if something is over or if they’re going to surprise us with an extension of the story in the future.

Be that as it may, very good news is coming for us warsies (or not, depending on their level of openness to new productions that expand the universe of the saga) because Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, currently taking place in London, was the space that Lucasfilm chose to share its plans in the near future in the field of cinematography and as I have already assumed, We have three new unrelated movies coming up (although yes, apparently, in the common space of the Star Wars universe) about which some interesting details have been revealed… very little, yes, you have to maintain intrigue and anticipation.

Before we get to the point of each of them, a very interesting aspect is that Lucasfilm is increasingly looking at productions that are located in space-time outside of the time period between Episode I and Episode IX. Personally, this seems like a great success to me for two reasons. The first is that there are already many productions, of various types, focusing on this period. However, moving away (albeit very slightly) from it increases the possibilities by several orders of magnitude.

The second reason is that the introduction of new narrative elements during this period can (and sometimes does) create inconsistencies in the canon (official narrative), which is a headache for more people than we might first think. By focusing the stories of these new films on other eras, we avoid this inconvenience, which, while smaller, still exists.

Star Wars will add three new movies, but not a trilogy

What’s cooking at Lucasfilms? Well three Star Wars movies, all three live-action (live action, as it became popular to say today, that these are not animated works), which will be led by James Mangold (Wolverine, Logan), Dave Filoni (historical “home” with The Mandalorian, The Boba Fett book and Star Wars Rebels, among others) and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face). There is still no information on the dates of their planned premiere.

We know what season everyone will be in. James Mangold’s takes a big leap back in time as it takes us Dawn of the Jedi Order, a very little explored and hugely promising period; Dave Filoni will focus on new republic and will conclude the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and other series of the saga; and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be developed a few years after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalkerand let’s see how Rey tries it create a new jedi order (I’ve said that with Lucasfilms, we can never consider a story completely closed, right?)
