Tesla in reverse
As the US government imposes sanctions on China, including trying to ban TikTok in the country under the guise of a “national threat,” Tesla is further expanding its dependence on the country. The government is also encouraging automakers and manufacturers to make more and more products domestically, as we can see from Apple itself with its proposal to use TSMC chips made on American soil.
In March, the government released guidance making electric vehicles eligible for a $7,500 tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act. Under the updated rules, companies must source minerals for their car batteries from the US and other approved vehicle trading partners in order to qualify for the exemption. Joe Biden also said that in order to receive funding under the CHIPS Act, companies will need to sign agreements, undertakes not to expand its production capacity in China. As we can see, Elon Musk does not seem to care much about the recommendations of the American government and is expanding his business in the Asian country.
