In February of this year, Google Drive users were surprised: They couldn’t create and upload All the files they want, as the Mountain View company places certain limits on the use of the service in order to maintain its “performance and reliability”.
The changes affecting both free and paid accounts were not well received, and some people decided to file a complaint on Reddit and their support page. With the border becoming controversial, Google backed off, but left the door open for future changes.
This is how we hit the limits on Google Drive
Until recently, the only limits we knew about Google Drive were storage and file sharing. we couldn’t exceed the allotted space (for example 15GB or 2TB) or share 400,000+ files via Workspace. This quietly changed.
A Google Drive user reported having 7 million files saved on Reddit, but started experimenting on February 14th. service related issues. New files could not be uploaded and folder creation was not allowed even though it had enough free space.
At first he thought this scenario might be due to a temporary bug, after all we know online services crash frequently, but his mind quickly changed when Google Drive asked him to delete 2 million files to continue using it.
According to the user, until then, Google hadn’t reported the change, so it surprised him. But soon the service itself gave him a warning message This confirmed their suspicions: a file upload limit had been set.
“This account has exceeded the 5 million item creation limit. To create more items, move them to the trash or delete them completely.”
Although 5 million files may seem like an inaccessible number, some users can reach it, as we saw in the example above. Let’s remember that Google One has payment plans up to 30 TB (in this last example, 299.99 euros per month).
As we said, the Mountain View giant took a step back on user complaints and canceled the changes. the news has come a message service account on Twitter.
“To maintain stability and optimize performance, we recently released a system update to Drive item limits. While this only affected a small number of people, we are reversing this change as we explore alternative approaches to ensure a great experience for everyone.”
The tweet was accompanied by another tweet that said, “If we need to make changes, we will notify users in advance,” suggesting that there may be a lack of prior communication.
Now this may not be the end of the changes to Google Drive. Acknowledges that the company itself exploring other ways to ensure the operation of the service. Of course we don’t know what kind of changes might happen in the future, but the possibility is on the table.
