Install an application. Use it once and throw it inside the app drawer. A classic. Android wants to put an end to the internal storage problem of owning dozens of apps we don’t use but we restored it that day, for some reason. Competing systems like iOS automatically remove unused apps. They want to follow these steps from Google.

The Google developer blog has announced a new auto-archiving function that will help save up to 60% of space on our devices without deleting user data, according to Google. We explain how it works.

Do not take up space if you are not using it

Auto-archiving is a new feature that allows users to free up internal storage. Applications that we use very rarely will be removed from the device, but only partially. The purpose is to save space, but in case the user wants to reinstall the application, your data remains intact.

These dates It will be saved in the Google cloud to be able to download them when we want to reinstall the application. It is also important to note that it is the user who chooses whether to activate from app to app. When we go to install an application and our internal memory is low, a popup will appear inviting us to use the automatic file.

If you accept, the system will search for applications that we do not use and we will archive them to make room for the new one we want to install. As you can see, at least at this initial stage of deployment, Google interprets this functionality as an emergency tool to be able to install apps when we have almost no internal space.

This feature will only be available for apps using the App Bundle (AAB). These new packages are an improvement over the classic APKs and have the advantage of both reducing the download size and being more modular. This ensures that the APK file is small and the data package (AAB) is downloaded externally.
