Today, Windows 11 Mobile should be a necessary competition to the duopoly of Apple and Google in mobile operating systems. Unfortunately, Microsoft abandoned this important market segment years ago, and it is unknown if it will ever return. With their concept samples, some artists imagine what the latest version of Windows adapted for mobile would look like.

Bill Gates recognized in his time that Windows Mobile was “the biggest mistake in the history of Microsoft”. He blamed it on a “distraction” from the antitrust lawsuit that US regulators filed against Microsoft in 1998, but the reality is that the launch of the iPhone caught Microsoft (and other big companies) off guard, while Google did. first funded and then acquired Android Inc. to make its developer a leader in mobility and a few years later crush Windows in the number of connected devices.

Steve Ballmer (and Bill Gates) prioritized other projects and when they wanted to respond the future was written. The Nokia purchase was the beginning of the end. Microsoft became its own company to sell mobile phones, manufacturers took it as a threat, suspended Windows Phone licensing and decided on Android. From there the adventure ended: a complete fiasco.

Current CEO Satya Nadella has attempted to remedy the situation “adopting” Android as its own system for mobility (Even used in his first mobile after the fiasco, the Surface Duo). It also produces mobile apps for its core services, with the Office suite at the fore, and connects Android with Windows in its quest for full convergence. But Windows Mobile is still an unsolved problem….

Artist AR 4789 used his design skills to show us what a mobile version of the operating system might look like. The result is certainly impressive, although its conversion as a real alternative to iOS and Android is something very different. And not only because of the software itself, but also because of the market situation itself.

Windows 11 Mobile features a taskbar and Start menu in the cleanest interface style of the latest Windows desktop; Tabbed File Explorer; customization feature; notification center; dark modes; gesture or voice control; the ability to open and switch between different surfaces; widgets of all kinds and long etc features that every mobile user would be looking for.

Will it be possible for Microsoft to resurrect Windows Mobile one day? Maybe after the release of Windows 12? Do you think it is possible to compete with iOS and Android? Wish there were more alternatives in mobile systems?
