Many abandoned the Exynos platform when Samsung opted for Qualcomm SoCs flagship, Galaxy S23. It was a smart decision, because the brand’s engineers did not hit the right button, so they decided to guarantee their flagship in the smartphone market, even if it was at the cost of partially sacrificing the image of their platform. In any case, and to mark the differences with the rest, it is true that both companies, Qualcomm and Samsung, have worked to create a personalized version.
A step back can be the beginning of a retreat, yes, but also a tactical move to gain momentum, and shortly after that announcement it became clear to us that we were not about to surrender in this case. As the first examples of this, in February Samsung introduced the Exynos 1330 and 1380, two integrated models aimed at the mid-range market, where Samsung chips have a good reputation, but also engineers were working on the future Exynos 2400with which the multinational company continued to aim for the high end.
Business and technology partners are essential in a market as competitive as the consumer technology market. Signing collaborations with technology companies that can contribute their knowledge in very specific areas usually results in a significant improvement in the bottom line. So when it was confirmed last week that AMD and Samsung would maintain their cooperation on the design of the graphics part of the South Korean SoC, it was clear that Samsung wanted to continue to challenge the top of the Qualcomm line.
All indications are that the future Galaxy S24 will again have a Qualcomm SoC, but the future of the S25 is not so clear, especially after what we can read in GSM Arena, where they state that AMD and Samsung are working on GPU optimization for the future high-end Exynos, likely the Exynos 2500. If this point is confirmed, and it seems quite likely after last week’s announcement, we can assume that Samsung intends to deploy its own integrated once again in the Galaxy S25.
The collaboration will focus on introducing RDNA 3 into Samsung chipsfor which AMD will provide said technology and Samsung will focus on efficiency, sacrificing as little performance as possible, but to guarantee that the GPU will adapt both thermally and in terms of consumption to smartphones, although they are at the top.
It will still be a while before we know what Samsung’s plans are for Exynos when it comes to its Galaxy family beyond the S24, but it seems increasingly clear that the hypothetical Exynos 2500 could mark a return. Whether it’s through the front door will be determined by its engineers’ ability to avoid repeating the mistakes of the Exynos 2200.
