Microsoft Designer was introduced somewhat incognito at the end of last year when the new Surface devices were announced. The design application in Microsoft 365 is very similar to Canva and aims to quickly create fun images for social media, invitations, digital postcards, graphics and many other projects.
Thanks to the multi-billion dollar collaboration between OpenAI and Microsoft, the design application uses the AI image generator DALL-E. This allows you to conveniently create variations of a design in seconds.
You start in Microsoft Designer by writing down what you want. The AI wizard generates a preview that you can iterate using text (AI) or manually edit to refine it thanks to a handy interface.
According to Microsoft, the designer app emerged from PowerPoint, where you can already create presentations automatically depending on the type of content.
The web version of Microsoft Designer is free for the time being in order to give everyone the opportunity to work with the tool. Whether it will remain free is not certain. We wouldn’t be surprised if, like Canva, a basic version remains free but premium features disappear behind a paywall and are only available to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
To try Microsoft Designer, you must first register on a waiting list. It is not yet clear how long you will have to wait. Gradually, the first testers are allowed to test the application.
