Astronomers have discovered a previously unknown asteroid orbiting the Earth. It can be called a new temporary satellite of the planet. The asteroid was named 2023 FW13. It is 10 to 20 meters in diameter. The object was identified thanks to the automatic telescope of the Pan-STARRS network in Hawaii.
As computer simulations show, the asteroid orbits longitudinally with respect to Earth with a 1:1 resonance. It arrived on our planet around 100 BC and is estimated to remain on our planet until 3700 – a record long time for an asteroid to become Earth’s temporary satellite.
Scientists plan to continue observing 2023 FW13. They stated that the data obtained may not be correct. Sky&Telescope, we can’t rule out the possibility that the asteroid is actually orbiting the Sun and not the Earth.
