Developers from Mozilla and Microsoft have teamed up to Fix the Windows Defender bug that has plagued Mozilla Firefox for over a decade.. The companies have released an update to MsMpEng.exe, the core Windows Defender process, to reduce memory consumption in the Firefox browser by about 75%. The difference happens after the update solves unnecessary applications in both Defender and Mozilla.

The difference in consumption should be noted by users. According to Yannis Juglaret, Senior Software Engineer at Mozilla, improving MsMpEng.exe results in “a 75 percent reduction in CPU usage of MsMpEng.exe when browsing with Firefox.” But after all, what was the problem that lasted a decade? According to the companies, the problem with MsMpEng.exe was identified when the Windows Defender Real-time Protection feature was activated.
According to Juglaret, both the Microsoft system and Mozilla contributed to the waste of time by increasing memory consumption. “There are two sides to this problem: Microsoft was doing too many useless calculations for every event, and we’re generating too many events.” In short, Mozilla generates more tracking events to protect the browser while browsing, and Windows Defender calculates all events generated unnecessarily.
Increasing energy consumption
How the Mozilla browser gets seven times more Event Tracking for Windows (ETW) than Edge and Chrome. On the other hand, Windows Defender overanalyzed all events, resulting in extremely high memory consumption each time Defender was activated. Juglaret notes that going forward, it’s important to “reduce the number of events fired by Firefox, which will reduce the CPU usage of all antivirus software.” Thus, other protection applications such as Norton will also create problems similar to Windows Defender.
Unnecessarily high memory consumption is bad for users. In addition to the slowness, battery consumption is significantly higher, which is a big problem for those who have a laptop and the device is not connected to the network.
