Security specialist Fortinet introduces its latest data center firewall solution, the FortiGate 7081F. According to Fortinet, the strength of this firewall lies in its energy efficiency.

Data centers must also be adequately secured to protect the terabytes of data. A firewall solution tailored to a data center is of course of a completely different caliber than the firewall that you place in front of your PC. Fortinet introduces the FortiGate 7081F, its most powerful firewall yet.

According to the official spec list, the FortiGate 7081F delivers 1.2 Tbps of raw firewall throughput coupled with 312 Gbps of threat protection. Enabling additional features like SSL inspection or IPsec VPN drops performance to 310 Gbps, The Register notes. Still up to five times the performance, twice the protection, and twice the IPsec VPN throughput compared to the average data center firewall, Fortinet claims without blushing.

Less power

In addition to the strong performance, the Fortigate 7081F has another important advantage: energy efficiency. According to Fortinet, the firewall uses up to 73 percent less power per Gbps than the industry average. Now that companies are looking for solutions to limit data center power consumption, this is a nice bonus.

This is possible because Fortinet is one of the few in the security industry that still operates its own ASICs. The modular chassis can be equipped with up to six dedicated processor modules, each containing NP7 network processing and co-processing ASICs, to offload a variety of workloads such as intrusion detection and antivirus from the host CPU.
