ABOUT Opera announced today that it is releasing an updated version of its app iOS which now includes your VPN for free. Opera, previously available for Mac, Windows, Linux and Android, now makes Opera the first browser to offer a free VPN service on all major computing platforms, the company said in a statement.
The companies worked together to release an update to the MsMpeng.exe process
The news is especially timely given that Opera’s biggest competitor, Google, expanded its own VPN tool for desktop users on Mac and PC late last year after previously supporting iOS and Android. But in the case of Google, their VPN is only available to paid subscribers on Google One Premium plans. Apple also offers a tool to encrypt your internet connection using the iCloud Private Relay feature, although it’s not really a VPN. But like Google, it’s also only available as a paid subscription (iCloud+).
Meanwhile, Opera VPN does not require a subscription. The company states that users do not need to create an account to sign in or use this feature. Opera also notes that it does not collect personal information or data related to the user’s browsing habits or source IP address. And the service doesn’t require any additional extensions to use – users can enable it from the app’s main menu to start encrypting their VPN traffic.
For iOS users, Opera’s mobile browser app aims to stand out beyond the new VPN functionality. The app includes other unique tools such as “My Flow” for sharing files between devices, a built-in Crypto Wallet feature, a built-in ad blocker, and a security-focused anti-cryptojacking feature, among others.
With today’s update, the iOS app is getting a few more additions, including a new bookmarking feature to organize your favorite content, and a live scores feature to keep track of the latest results from sports teams via the leaderboard on the browser’s home page.
However, Opera warns that while features including VPN will be rolled out starting this Wednesday (12), the full rollout will happen in the coming weeks. This means you may not see the new VPN feature right away when you launch the iOS app, but you should see it soon.
