The world of video games has evolved a lot over the last three decades and is very special because of some of the most important changes in the sector they were produced in the phase of what we know as Generation Yalso called millennials.
Generation Y consists of those who were born between the eighties and the year 2000. During this period, such important events took place in the world of video games as, for example, 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit and 128-bit console releases, and also launched some of the most important and influential franchises in the sector, among which we can mention names like Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Sonic, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Street Fighter.
What can I say, it was a real golden age for video games and I was lucky enough to live it. Since then, the scope of video games has increased and reached even people who decades ago had no interest in this type of digital entertainment.
We can say that today we play video games much more than three decades ago and that the demand for them has grown exponentially, But how much do we play and why do we do it? These are two very interesting questions that we can answer thanks to a study conducted by Fandom. The data provided by this study is very interesting and we are going to review it in detail.
In the first graph, we can see that the consumption of video games among millennials is very high. 40% admit that they devote more than 22 hours a week to this type of free time, while only 29% of pre-adolescent children surveyed achieve this number of hours per week. When it comes to year-over-year trends in video game consumption, most Millennials say it has stayed the same, while Gen Z, teens, and tweens have grown significantly.
The second chart shows us this the reasons why these four generations consume video games. For pre-adolescents, the dominant reason is to spend time and personal fulfillment, achievements. Adolescents are dominated by relaxation and passing the time, while generation Z mainly plays for relaxation and passing the time. Millennials say they play mostly for relaxation and exploration.
In my case, the main reason I’ve enjoyed video games for over 30 years is because they let me live an adventure and discover worlds in a unique way that would also not be possible in real life. And you, why do you play video games? Read in the comments.
