The hackers who broke into Western Digital claim to have stolen 10 terabytes of data, including customer details and executive contact information.

The cyber attack on storage specialist Western Digital is mysterious. In fact, we hardly know what exactly is going on. Western Digital issued a statement on April 3, but it contained little more than an admission that an incident had taken place. Since then the company has been silent.

TechCrunch managed to reach out to one of the hackers claiming to be behind the attack for more information. The hacker claims that more than 10 terabytes of company data were stolen in the attack. This also includes customer data, which the attacker does not want to go into detail.

The hackers also have phone numbers of company executives, data from the SAP back office, and a certificate that allows them to sign documents on behalf of Western Digital. TechCrunch has had this certificate analyzed by two specialists who have confirmed its authenticity.

8 digits

Right now, Western Digital and the attackers are locked in a power play, which is probably one of the reasons the company is so dormant. The hackers are demanding an eight-digit fine, at least ten million euros. If they don’t, the attackers will reveal the stolen data. For the time being, the company management is keeping its leg stiff and there have not yet been any negotiations.

My Cloud back online

Western Digital’s online services have been severely disrupted since the cyber attack. The My Cloud applications were completely unavailable for five days. On April 7, the company announced that it had restored local access. Yesterday came the redeeming news that the online platform My Cloud is fully up and running again.
