OpenAI confirms that GPT-5 is not yet developed. In addition, there are no plans to train a new AI model in the near future. Researchers are now working on the capabilities of GPT-4 and ChatGPT.
For now, we shouldn’t expect a successor to the GPT-4 Large Language Model. OpenAI launched GPT-4 in March of this year and immediately integrated the capabilities of the LLM into the (paid) version of ChatGPT. Microsoft is also working on GPT-4. The AI skills that the software giant has announced are almost all based on it.
The development of AI is picking up speed. Can we then look forward to the successor to GPT-4? CEO Sam Altman claims no. GPT-5 is not currently in training. Additionally, OpenAI doesn’t plan to start doing this any time soon either.
That doesn’t mean that research on generative AI has suddenly been put on hold. Finally, OpenAI is diligently working on the capabilities of GPT-4 and also pay attention to better security for the model. It’s unclear what else the company can achieve with this model. In theory, OpenAI can still introduce many improvements without adding a new version number behind its GPT model.
The predecessor GPT-3 also received an upgrade with GPT 3.5. It is quite possible that we will see even more improved variants of GPT-4. Also, GPT-4 is still very new. It is by no means clear where the limits of this model lie. Even without GPT-5, OpenAI will continue to be at the forefront of AI research for a while.
GPT-4 itself raises enough questions. The European Data Protection Authority has now launched an investigation into ChatGPT over possible privacy issues. This investigation follows an ultimatum for a ban on ChatGPT in Italy.
Finally, OpenAI appears to be using sensitive data, including EU citizens’ personal data, to train its models without the necessary permissions. With this in mind, it might be wise for OpenAI not to release the next version of ChatGPT to the world immediately.
